Thiruvonam (Secound Onam)

Onam is a traditional ten-day harvest festival that marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. The festival is celebrated with fervor as King Mahabali is greatly respected by his subjects.
King Mahabali is also popularly called Maveli and Onathappan. It’s the biggest festival of the year in Kerala, in South India. The festival occurs at the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam calendar. It also has a social significance as it coincides with the harvest season which takes place during the months of August and September. Onam, the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities.
Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu(music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and other celebrations.
